Why board games?
This question can be observed through several aspects. Why would anyone play board games when there are a large number of fantastic games on various devices, starting from mobile phones, through personal computers till game consoles? Those games have gone so far that sometimes it is hard to distinguish a game from a movie. Players are like the actors in the movie and they create the story themselves (within given limits). The graphics are practically brought to perfection. VR is also at an enviable level.
With this in mind, it makes perfect sense to ask why someone would take an old box off the shelf, unfold a map, arranged the pieces and started a game consisting of seemingly identical circles and limited moves?
The answer can be simple or complex. In this article, the focus is on simplicity.
Social aspect. As the name suggests, to play board games, you usually need company. Real people of flesh and blood sitting next to each other and trying to outwit each other. Whether it's about family, friends or even a group of people who do not know each other, the game soon after the start becomes tense, sympathy disappears and every player wants to win. Bluffing, cold-bloodedness, temperament… are all integral parts by which players try to gain an advantage and outsmart other players. This direct contact between players is something that is only possible with board games. Sometimes the game ends in tears and anger, but constant direct communication between players gives board games an advantage over other games.
Educational aspect. Is playing just a fun way to kill time or is there something else? As a rule, each game teaches people a few basic things: how to win with dignity, how to accept defeat with honor, and how and when to collaborate with other players. Modern board games add another level of education that, among other things, includes learning to see the bigger picture, strategic and tactical way of thinking, combinatorics, economic principles and much more. Often, they include education that covers the topic of the game and does not directly affect the game itself (eg the bord game "Knights of Health" educates about the benefits of fruit and vegetables to human health).
Something for everyone. There are so many different genres, types and mechanics of the game that we can claim with certainty that there is an interesting, engaging, ‘insainly’ good board game for every person in this world. Whether you prefer solo games, games in a smaller company (up to 4 people) or games for a larger company, rest assured it is ‘out there somewhere’. The only question is whether you found it yet. :)
